Dealer Notes
António Batalho Reis, (1838 – 1917) Portuguese oenologist and promoter of good wine making practices.
His attendance as Portuguese delegate at the Lyon International Exhibition “to learn about the most modern machinery and study the region's viticulture”, resulted in the publication of A vinha e o vinho. The first part is an account of his visits to wineries in a number of French wine making regions, “whether by railway, in a carriage, on horseback, or even on foot”, and in part about the special exhibition on viticulture that was on display at the exhibition in Lyon, with a presentation of the latest equipment and processes used in wine making. The work concludes with notes on the main types of wines that were tasted at the Lyon exhibition and the analogies found with various Portuguese wines.
Among the many illustrations of wine making equipment are some of Batalha Reis’s own conception, including the 'theionoxyphero', a sulphuriser he invented and promoted with lectures and demonstrations thoughout Portugal’s wine-producing areas and which was the subject of his first publication, Enxofre e vinho, (1871).
