Book Description

A friendship album dedicated to ‘May.’ The owner was clearly a trainee teacher and the manuscript was compiled by her friends, fellow trainee teachers, in 1873. There are many examples of original poetry regarding their life in St. Mary’s Hall, Cheltenham, the women’s department of Cheltenham Training College. Founded in 1847 the college was established to train governors and governesses. By the 1870s there was a huge demand for teachers and Cheltenham became the largest training college in the country. It is now part of the University of Gloucestershire. This keepsake is particularly interesting for the pieces concerning day to day life at the school. Titles of these original poems include: The Student’s Own Time, Examinations, School Life, The Study Bell, College Friends, The Student’s Dream, The Teacher’s Question, and Class Walk. There are a few others too, in addition to the many other works on various other subjects. The contributors also record their home towns alongside their names, making this not only ripe for further research but a delightful record of the reach and scope of education by, of and for women in the middle of the Victorian era. I will be bringing many other manuscript items to the Harrogate fair, including a wide selection of works by women.
