1874-75 TOUR of the UNITED STATES & CANADA This is an important large Folio Leather bound Album of Photographs measuring 21 inches by 15 inches approx. containing 175+ Albumen prints recording a tour in the United States of America and a in the years 1874-1875 by a L. Hope Edwardes, the majority of the photographs are captioned, The first page of the album contains portrait photographs of the U.S. President General Grant, General Sherman, Lieutenant General Sheridan, Marshall Jewell Postmaster General, The American Poet Willian Cullen Bryant, and the Album then continues with photographs of the tour, Baltimore Maryland with pictures of the Harbour, Chesapeake Bay with many ships, the Battle Monument in Monument Square, the Washington Monument, Druid’s Hill Park, then two large Albumen prints of cartoons (14” by 10” approx.) titled A Ku Klux Jury in South Carolina with a handwritten explanation of the Ku Klux Clubs, Carpetbaggers and the Jury Process in the southern states, photographs of Cotton Pickers in the field and Negro cabins in Charleston South Carolina, Fort Sumter, The Washington Monument in Capitol Square, Richmond Virginia, Savannah Harbour shipping the cotton with many people in the scene, the Fountain in the public gardens Savannah, a number of large photographs of Bonaventure Cemetery near Savannah Georgia, a street scene in Savannah, photographs of Florida, the Everglades and Swamps, Negro Quarters in Jacksonville, Charlotte Street & Hospital Street in St. Augustine, St John’s River, The Landing Pier Green Cove Springs, Jacksonville, A Florida Bayou, Mississippi Steam Boats, Jackson Square, the Cathedral, Canal Street, The Levee, New Orleans Louisiana, St. Louis Street Scene Missouri, a fabulous large photograph of the Mississippi River packed with broken ice and the Bridge at St. Louis, The James Howard paddle Steamer, Carondelet, The Cattle Yards at Chicago , The Water Works, Palmer House Hotel, and scenes of the City of Chicago showing the devastation left by the great Fire of 1871, The Niagara Falls, the Horse Shoe Falls, The Rapids above the falls, The Falls in Winter in ice and Snow, The White House in Washington, The Treasury building, inside the Senate Chamber and the House of Representatives, and various photographs of the inside the Whitehouse, New York with photos of Union Square and Broadway, Madison Square Gardens, Central Park, then Pennsylvania, inside the independence chamber where the Declaration of Independence was signed, The Liberty Bell, The Statue of Penn, Philadelphia University, Independence Hall, Fairmont Park, Old Swedes Church, Massachusetts, Charles Street, Boston Common, The Washington Elm Cambridge, Tremont Mall, Longfellow’s House, The State House Boston, The Public Garden, Maid of the Mist Fountain, Athenian Building Beacon Street, The Memorial Hall, State Street, Kings Chapel. The Maine and New Brunswick, Saint John Suspension Bridge, The Harbour, Street Scenes in Saint John, Portland, Congress Street, Ships in the Harbour, the Montreal Canada, a panoramic view of Montreal, the River and Bridge, the Water Works, a crowded scene fancy dress ball at the Skating Rink, an ice packed St. Lawrence river scene Montreal, and various wintry street scenes in the city, the St. James Club Dorchester, Wellington Terrace, St Catherine Street, Sherbrooke Street, People Cutting Ice on the St Lawrence River, excellent views of Quebec and the River with tall sailing ships and stream boats, Floating timber down the St Lawrence, The Citadel, St. Lewis Gate, The natural Steps above the Waterfalls on the Montmorency river, Snow bound cottages at Point Levi, a railway track buried in snow and pictures of a steam train with a plough pushing its way through the deep snow, street scenes in Quebec, including Breakneck steps, Little Champlain street, Durham Terrace, and the House where Montgomery was laid. Then Ottawa, The Parliament building, the River, the Halifax Nova Scotia, with Halifax seen from the Dartmouth side of the river, Melville island, and various snowbound street scenes in Halifax, . many of the photographs measure 3 inches by 3.5 inches approx., but there are quite a number larger ones measuring 9 inches by 7 inches and 10 by 5, and 14.5 by 10.5 inches. Nearly 180 in total providing a fantastic historical record of the United States and Canada in 1874-75. The album is very large and heavy, nearly 10 kilos unpacked
