Book Description

A collection of thirty three deeds and legal documents dating from 1340 to 1820. From the collection of J.J.Colman (whose bookplate is on the front pastedown) of the Norfolk mustard empire, most of these documents relate to Norfolk and, more specifically, Great Yarmouth. They cover a range of legal matters including wills, probate, land transfers, money lending and the security for debt, the transfer of a pub and the lease of a large farm in North Norfolk. In addition, but unrelated, are seven fragments of manuscript and printed mediaeval and early modern Books of Hours, Missals and Prayer Books, some with music. All are tipped in or pasted in on later paper and bound in a large nineteenth century half calf album (605x790mm) with a red Morocco label on the upper cover lettered in gilt “Old Wills & Indentures &c 1517 to 1820”. In fact, the earliest document dates from 1340. 1. Document dated 18th year of the reign of Edward III (i.e. 1340) This is a charter whereby Robert Mordaunt and his wife Joan of Turvey in Bedfordshire grant land in Syvelsho (Silsoe) to William Vavasour of Syvelsho. 2. Deed relating to Thomas Swatherne of Soham Major in the reign of Edward VI. 3. Indenture being a grant by Thomas Dalton of Great Yarmouth to Henry Frockers of Great Yarmouth dating from 1547. 4. Confirmation of Thomas Dene to Thomas Daubeney and Thomas Georges of a messuage in Great Yarmouth dating from 1547. 5. Indenture dated 1628, a grant of land by William Stevenson of Bishop Thornton in York. 6. 1639. A sale of property by Thomas Bridgefield for £20. 7. Will of Nicholas Smith of Great Yarmouth dated 1640 with Probate dated 1641. 8. 15 October 1662. Agreement between James Johnson and Thomas Johnson for the purchase money for purchase of land in Great Yarmouth. 9. 15 October 1662. Agreement between Thomas Johnson of Gorleston and James Johnson witnessing the handing over the money referred to in the previous agreement. 10. Dutch manuscript leaf on vellum. Possibly 14th century, this might be the popular Middle Dutch Van den vos Reynaerde, a version of the story of Reynard the Fox by Willem die Madoc maecte. 11. 12 January 1663. Deed of Obligation from John King to Robert Fisher of Great Yarmouth. 12. 12 January 1663. Agreement between John King and Robert Fisher. 13. 14 January 1666. Deed between Brian Young and his wife of King’s Lynn and William Warde and his wife of Great Yarmouth for the transfer of land in Great Yarmouth. 14. 8 October 1670. A release by William and Mary Tracy of Great Yarmough of James Davison from a debt. 15. 8 October 1670. A supplementary deed relating to the previous agreement. 16. 20 July 1671. Assignment of land by Martha Donne, a widow of Great Yarmough. 17. A further agreement relating to Martha Donne. 18. 11 August 1672. Last Will of Robert Alborne of Great Yarmouth with probate. 19. 25 March 1671. Bond for payment of money between William Tracy and James Davison. 20. 25 March 1671. A conditional feoffment of land in Great Yarmouth between James Davison and William Tracy. 21. 30 October 1688. True copy of part of will of James Symonds sworn before John Marker, Notary Publick. 22. 15 March 1707. True copy of part of will of Elizabeth Symonds sworn before John Marker, Notary Publick. 23. 9 July 1674. Release of right of mortgage over land in Great Yarmouth by James Davison and Henry Dunn made in an agreement with William Tracy on 25 March 1671. 24. Will of Robert Fisher of 5 July 1693 and probate. 25. Agreement dated 12 June 1696 between Gabriel Ward and his son for the transfer of the Brewhouse, Malthouse, Millhouse, stables, yards and other property in Great Yarmouth. 26. 27 October 1707. Lease between Richard Farrell and his wife Sarah and Samual Turner for a building called Leakes in Great Yarmouth. 27. Lease dated 24th February 1732 between John Croshold of Norwich and John Prese of Gresham of land at Gresham. 28. Mary Cooke and Thomas Artis, the executors of the will of Thomas Cooke of Great Yarmouth bringing a claim against Robert Bottom for the enforcement of a debt of £66. 29. A complaint brought by John Bracey of Great Yarmouth against Wiliam Kington for damage of £40 caused by trespass. 30. Envelope relating to a legal document between James Garthon of Cossey and James Campbell. 31. A collection of three 5% annuities bought by William Norton dated 14 August 1795, 18 April 1796 and 22 July 1799. Signed Salomans. 32. Indenture (two leaves), an agreement dated 11 October 1802 between William Spurrell of Thurgaton and William Spurrell of Erpingham for the lease of a mansion house and farm at Thurgaton, Bassingham and Gresham for £210 p.a. 33. 18 October 1820. Agreement between the Executors of G. Clifton and Ann Ruxby for the lease of the Rose Public House in Great Yarmouth. 34. Seven fragments from mediaeval and sixteenth century manuscript and printed Books of Hours, prayer books and missals, some with music.
