A Faery Pageant : With Illustrations Drawn By Him, And Engraved On Wood By Ivy A. Ellis And The Author, And Bound By Frank Garrett
Book Description
The sole UK printing published by Kynoch Press, UK in 1924. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition with original linen spine, printed label and green coloured boards (Some copies were also issued with decorated paper covered boards). Number ’73’ of only 475 copies issued. The book is oblong and measures 5 x 6 1/2 inches. A slight scuff and a faint ink mark to the front board with the lightest of markings to the linen spine. The printed label to the front cover is complete. There is a hint of toning to the front label and the page edges. Free from inscriptions. Twelve striking illustrations and double spread end-papers drawn by Sleigh on separate pages and engraved on wood by Ivy A Ellis and the author. Interestingly the publisher's cover label has the title: 'A Faery Pageant' whereas the title page has 'A Faerie Pageant'. Printed green decorative initials throughout by Bernard Sleigh. Slight offsetting to the opposite page from the illustrations. A beautiful and very scarce allegorical book by Bernard Sleigh, one of the leading artists of the Birmingham School of Arts and Crafts, and student of Arthur Gaskin. Bernard Sleigh was an English mural painter, stained-glass artist, illustrator and wood engraver, and a member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. As a young man, Sleigh was greatly inspired by the work of George MacDonald and William Morris. A handsome production and rarely found in such condition. The book is protected in an archival Mylar cover.
