Celebrating 50 years of book fairs 1974-2024

Book Description

Two vols. 8vo. 23.3.cm x 14.4 cm. Vol 1: pp xliv, 382. Vol 2: xxii, 432. Eighth edition of Land Birds, Sixth edition of Water Birds. Sixth edition preface to Vol 1 as usual, dated 1826, printed on thicker paper. Near contemporary half calf, marbled endpapers and edges, gilt spine, signed with binder's stamp Hetherington Binders Uxbridge. Marbled paper to boards replaced, boards a little cockled, a little light marking to prelims and end leaves but overall a decent bright set in a solid binding (solid enough to permit the volumes to be read), with no annotations. The 1826 issue of Bewick s birds is of some bibliographic interest, for Bewick rewrote it extensively, reordering and changing the contents so as to give it a more scientific layout, as well as adding new birds. Roscoe 31 and 32.
