A Prospect of the Cathedral and College of Winchester taken from the North-West to which is added a map of the centre of the city by J P Sayer, published by Strand Magazine London circa 1948. On paper 20 by 13 cm., with map opening to 26 by 20 cm. The larger map takes the from of a birds-eye view of the city, with the coat of arms of Winchester and text on various historical and geographical features. The reverse has a street plan of the central area surrounded by vignettes of important buildings. J P Sayer was a British artist whose work included railway posters and maps, with this map being one of a series he produced for the Strand Magazine in the late 1940s. His maps combine history with humour and reflect a romantic interest in the past and a feeling of optimism for post-war Britain. Colour. One central fold as issued. VG condition
