Book Description

JAMAICA An Almanack and register for Jamaica for the year of our Lord 1777, being the first after Bissextile or Leap Year. Jamaica: Printed by Joseph Thompson and Co in Harbour Street (1776) Bound in full calf, the many blank pages filled with the original owner's notes and business accounts including bad debts. Very fine. The only known copy. Includes lists of judges, army and navy officers, Postmaster General and names of deputies, rates of freight and tables for exchanging Jamaica currency into Sterling. This almanac contains a Kalendar of Months, Sabbaths, and Holidays, which the Hebrews or Jews observe and keep, For the Years 5556 and 5557 of the Creation (p. 15). The names of the Jewish holidays and new months are listed in English and Hebrew type. Jamaican almanacs included a Jewish calendar (English only) as early as 1776, which would seem to be an indication of the importance of Jewish residents in the eyes of Christian Jamaicans (Korn). This is the first almanac to list the holidays and new months in Hebrew type. These Jamaican calendars contain the earliest appearance of Hebrew type in the Western Hemisphere in a publication intended for Jews. (Earlier works with Hebrew type, such as Judah Monis’ Hebrew Grammar, were intended for gentile audiences). The first book published for the Jews of North America containing Hebrew type had only just been published (Singerman 289) and the first Hebrew calendar on the continent was not printed until 1851 (Singerman S463).
