The author, the Countess De La Warr, sailed from England to Italy and then down the Adriatic stopping off in the Balkans before going on to Crete where they stopped in Chania, then under Turkish rule and visited a Turkish warship in Suda Bay. Then on to Chios before arriving at Smyrna and describing Turkey in some depth.
