An entire body of philosophy according to the principles of the famous Renate Des Cartes
Book Description
First edition. Folio. [30], 401, [3], 1-92, 97-263. Full title reads: An entire body of philosophy according to the principles of the famous Renate Des Cartes: in three books . / written originally in Latin by the learned Anthony Le Grand ; now carefully translated from the last corrections, alterations, and large additions of the author, never yet published . by Richard Blome. Sometime expertly extensively restored by John Gardner of Borough Green (1944-2012), a late distinguished apprenticed trade binder in London. Full speckled brown calf, with panelled front and rear boards, raised bands, contrasting label and blind tooling to spine, new endpapers, bookbinders label to rear. The frontis and title page are mounted with loss to margins (but text still largely intact), with further margin repairs to initial leaves, and occasional repair thereafter. The top right of the first heraldic leaf is patched with a blank, where presumably a man who has fallen out of favour has had his crest removed or censored. After the initial repairs, the text is largely clean (albeit with occasional repair) until the final leaves which have at some point been exposed to damp but are now stable and not unsightly (please see photos). A really excellent example of late twentieth century book binder craftsmanship, which means that the book can now be carefully read and extensively studied without fear of further damage.
Dealer Notes
The book itself runs: frontis, printed title page, Dedication (two pages), Preface (11 pages), Epistle to the reader (2 pages),Contents (4 pages), Explanation of the sculptures (plates) (8 pages), followed by the text up to 403, then a printed part-title page, dedication, and second text segment. The volume is extensively illustrated with a frontispiece, plate showing group of philosophers, three plates of geometric diagrams, five plates of heraldic devices of the benefactors of the volume, and 89 further numbered plates (numbered 1-90: seemingly no number 19, plate 31 and 32 bound out of sequence): often printed back to back. The number of plates appears to vary. This one has in total 101 (including the frontis and the preliminary plates), text is complete.
