Illustrated with some rather pleasing generic ballooning vignettes and woodcuts by Willis of migratory birds.Bound in half leather (new spine) and original marbled boards. Spine in six compartments with label, gilt, with gilt ruling to the raised bands. Bookplate of Henry B.H. Beaufoy, F.R.S. “ friend and relative” of the author [whose ascent in a ballon is described p62 onwards]. Ink stamped numbers to verso of front free endpaper.An interesting and uncommon title which presents a history of balloon flights up to publication date and mentions various experiments carried out during flights, as well as medical aspects of taking to the skies in balloons. There is an additional 8 page section on the migration of birds with nice illustrations, an Appendix on the “six seasons of the year”, and the last page has an illustration of two cats, captioned “ two of the earliest Aëronauts”. Uncommon.
