Large 8vo. First edition of this translation. Full crushed blue morocco by Bumpus, with raised bands to the spine, ruled gilt borders and fleurs-de-lys. All edges gilt. Silk marker ribbon. Tissue-guarded coloured frontispiece and sixteen further plates by Eileen Lawrence Smith. Spine slightly darkened. Steel engraved bookplate of Robertson Lawson on front pastedown. Silk marker ribbon hanging on by a thread. Faint foxing throughout. Near fine.
Dealer Notes
A sumptuous binding commissioned by the illustrator and translator, as recorded inside the front cover, ‘R. L. from E. and D.’ Robertson Lawson’s bookplate, dated 1898, features books, thistles and a castle. At the bottom edge is an inscription in ink, ‘In affectionate remembrance from Clara. April 24 1917’.
