Published by William S. Orr & Co, London, nd*, 2nd edition. [* 1855 is printed in gilt to the base of the spine, the first edition was published in 1846, the third in 1859]. Later (20th century) blue half leather binding with blue cloth boards. Five raised bands to spine , gilt lettering and decoration to spine. 12ins x 9.75ins, xvi, 311pp plus 60 tissue guarded hand coloured botantical plates. A little light foxing to the contents and index pages but the plate pages are clean and nice and bright. Each plate depicts several species of flowers. Jane Loudon was a self taught botantical artist, who, after marrying the botanist James Loudon and becoming involved in his work, realised that there was an unmet demand for simple botantical reference books for middle class ladies. A VG copy in an attractive modern binding. Nb heavy book, additional postage may be requested for overseas sales.
