[Bucolica Georgica et Aeneis] P. Virgilii Maronis Bucolica Georgica et Aeneis / ex Cod
Book Description
Folio. Three volumes. Vol One: xcii, 211, (1), inserted plate with engravings of sample manuscript hands texts to recto and verso between viii-ix. Vol Two: lx, 336, map facing page 1. Vol Three: xxiv, Half-title to each volume, title pages in red and black, engraved portrait to title pages, engraved frontispieces to all three volumes, large engraved capitals, many head and tail pieces, engravings to text. Text is in Latin and Italian, with explications and variant readings. Bound in a very worn vernacular binding, spines eroded showing bands beneath, front covers detached or detaching, with Italianate floral boards, and reinforced sides, edges speckled, and plain endpapers. We have seen no binding quite like this. Internally, occasionally very slightly dusty, but overall a wide margined clean copy on good, thick paper, with all pages intact. Simply put, a wonderful piece of printing. A resplendent work. A pity about the worn binding, which is in itself nevertheless rather unusual, and which could be rebacked whilst leaving most of its unusual features intact
