Cambridge University At War

Book Description
A scarce and unusual pamphlet sans author, date or publisher but 'written under the auspices and direction of the Co-ordinating Committee for Research into the Use of the University for War.' Internal evidence suggests 1935 as the publication date. The front cover is a scraperboard illustration, and a very fine one it is too. The result of academic input into warmongering is depicted as a futuristic spectre of death, presenting his victims in a mass grave enclosed with knives and guns.
The contents are no less striking. The Committee above was composed of members from five university societies, including the Anti – War Movement and the Socialist Society. They draw on contemporary reports of the last war – just 16 years previously – to warn of what might lie ahead. All faculties were at risk, not just those with laboratories, and a refusal to help carries the risk of imprisonment: several pages are devoted to the horrific treatment of Conscientious Objectors from the university, not least to Bertrand Russell.
Needless to say, many of the concerns raised in the 44pp booklet are as relevant now as they were then.
