Captain Scott’s Message to England.
Book Description
First edition. Small 4to. pp. 30, [2, colophon]; three tipped-in portraits (Scott, Oates, Bowers) and one tipped-in group port. of the offices on board the Discovery; occasional very light foxing, previous owner’s inscription to first page, else very good in the original grey wrappers, slight soiling to upper wrapper, lacking the “Wilson Supplement”.
Dealer Notes
“A memorial publication appearing soon after news of the polar party’s demise reached Great Britain. This thin, almost ephemeral item possesses a sombre tone that reflects a nation in mourning” (Rosove, Antarctica). The booklet was bound without a section relating to Edward A. Wilson, and a 4pp. “Wilson Supplement” is sometimes found with copies, not present here; as Rosove comments, the “Wilson Supplement’ was “so obviously integral to the publication that its omission during binding must have been an accident”.
