CLARISSA, or the History of a Young Lady. Comprehending the Most Important Concerns of Private Life, and Particularly Showing the Distresses that May Attend the Misconduct Both of Parents and Children, in Relation to Marriage. The Seventh edition.
Book Description
EIGHT VOLUMES. 8vo. (6.9 x 4.3 inches). Engraved frontis in each volume. Folding engraved music plate in Volume 2. Complete set with all half titles and engraved plates. The frontis and music plate in volume two are original but supplied from another copy. A few small worm holes to a couple of the volumes and one small tear, without loss, to the folding music plate but still a very good clean set in lovely contemporary full calf bindings. Spines with raised bands, the compartments ruled in gilt. Red title labels decorated and lettered in gilt. A little chipping to the spine tops on two volumes and some corner a bit bumped but this is a highly attractive and tactile set of Richardson's epic masterpiece.
At approximately 970,000 words, Clarissa is the longest novel in the English literary canon, and the first to address affairs of the heart. In the Guardian list of the 100 best novels it was voted at No. 4.
