Book Description

1st Edition, 14 x 22 cm. Green cloth with gilt stamped titles to the front and spine xxiv, 416pp with 4 full page photographic plates, in scarce original dust jacket with 12/6 net price on the spine. The boards are clean with bright titles and just a hint of rubbing to the spine tips and corners, with a small 2mm drip mark on the front cover. Internally clean, without name, inscription or bookplate and just a strip of toning to the free endpapers where the dust jacket does not reach and a couple of very faint spots to the edge of the textblock. The dust jacket which is now protected in a removable, clear cover (not shown) is a remarkable survivor, only lightly dust marked with minimal loss to the corners and a 2cm closed tear on the upper joint at the head of the spine with associated creasing along the top edge. The paper from the dust jacket was folded over from this tear which explains its slightly different colour. All in all a fabulous example of, “the first important English handbook on birth control” [Garrison-Morton 1641.2]. Stopes expounded the belief that contraception should no longer be taboo and that it was of prime concern that babies should be happy, healthy and desired by their mothers.
