An exceptionally clean and bright copy of the first edition thus with illustrations by Hugh Thomson throughout.
The dark green pictorial cloth is heavily decorated with a floral design depicting a pot of flowers ( chrysanthemums?) standing over a tray laid for tea surrounded by playing cards and a plate of biscuits . All edges are gilt. Dark green endpapers to match the binding. Uncommon in such nice condition.
Dealer Notes
Affixed to the half title page is a handwritten gift inscription dated 1933 . Also tipped in is a newspaper clipping dated 1932 advising of the ringing of church bells in “ Cranford “ parish church to celebrate 100 years since Elizabeth Cleghorn married William Gaskell there .
