Carr was born in London in 1772, went to Rugby School, became a solicitor, gave up law for health reasons and published accounts of his travels illustrated with his own sketches of journeys in various European countries. After some success with his first books he published "The Stranger in Ireland", 1806, after which he was knighted by the Duke of Bedford, who was also the Viceroy of Ireland. "Spain" was his last travel book, published in 1811. Lord Byron, who had met Carr in Cadiz on a brief visit, refers to him in some suppressed stanzas of Canto 1 of "Childe Harolde" as 'Green Erin's knight and Europe's wandering star'.
