CARTE, Thomas. A Full Answer to the Letter from a By-Stander, &c. Wherein his false calculations, and misrepresentations of facts in the time of King Charles II are refuted. And an historical account is given of all the Parliamentary aids in that reign, from the Journals of the House of Commons, the ancient and modern power of the crown, and the excessive height to which it is risen of late, are clearly represented. And reasons offered for restoring to the freeholders of England their ancient right of chusing high sheriffs and justices of peace in the county courts, as a proper means towards restoring the ballance of our constitution, and putting a stop to the progress of corruption. By R- H-, Esq. 214pp., decorative head-piece. A good clean copy internally, bound in full contemporary calf, joints cracked but firm, corners and head and tail of the spine worn. Contemporary name ‘Elibank’ at the head of the title-page, and name erased at the foot, with some loss to the price below the imprint. 8vo. printed for J. Robinson. 1742. ~ The first edition of Carte's reply to a 1741 pamphlet by Corbyn Morris on the financing of a large standing army and the dependence of the power of the crown upon economic factors. The ownership name may be Patrick Murray, 5th Lord Elibank (1703-1778). When in Scotland in 1773, Dr. Johnson paid Elibank a visit at his house of Ballencrieff Castle, Haddingtonshire. He was a member of the Cocoa Tree Club and The Poker Club. A staunch Jacobite, Carte’s Jacobite sympathies would have appealed.
