Dealer Notes
A WWI-era women's VAD certification of enrolment, belonging to and signed by the British artist Edith le Breton (1912-1993). Date: 22nd September 1917. The Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) was a British Red Cross voluntary unit of civilians providing nursing care for military personnel in the United Kingdom and various other countries in the British Empire.

Le Breton was a painter with a national profile, best known for her paintings of northern scenes, many of them in Altrincham, Greater Manchester. Her paintings, most often oil on canvas, were representational depictions that generally chronicled post-war life in the north of England. She also worked in other crafts, painting china and textiles. Le Breton was friendly with L.S. Lowry, the celebrated painter of working class northern life, and he took an interest in her work.
