Very good, clean condition. An extremely rare volume, with a complicated printing history. It appears to have been published first by T. Jackson aroundabout 1800, with a single copy noted in ESTC (University of Kansas). Phillips then appears to have published several, changed issues just after the turn of the century. This is longer than most (having 558 pages), but comes with the earlier address for Phillips, before he moved his operations to New Bridge Street, which would place it apparently at 1804 or so. A substantial book of jokes and humorous anecdotes, with light-hearted references to love, women, insobriety, the Aristocracy, America, Ireland, the clergy, and so on, eg American Curiosity: So inquisitive are the Americans that Dr Franklin tells us, when he travelled in that country and wished to ask his road from any one he met, he found it expedient to save time by prefacing his question with, My name is Benjamin Franklin, by trade a printer, am come from such a place and going to such a place and now which is my road? (page 307).
