Based at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, George Bentham, (1800-1884), collaborated with Sir Joseph Hooker (1817-1911), spending 27 years researching and examining specimens in preparation of this work. Published in Latin it included 7,569 genera, and more than 97,200 species.
It was an authoritative taxonomy of genera and species that was largely adopted by modern systems of classification.
