Dealer Notes
The first edition of a collection of stories “written in a manner similar to accounts of true hauntings”. Indeed the author was so successful that at least one reviewer assumed that these were all true accounts. The collection was largely forgotten until the 1970s when some of the stories began to appear in anthologies, since when it has remained in print and re-evaluated as a classic of Victorian ghost fiction, in many ways ahead of its time. A “single superlative volume of weird stories…” (Shadows in the Attic).
