Book Description

FIRST U. K EDITION. 1st printing. 8vo.(8.8 x 5.9 inches). 916pp. A very good clean copy bound in publishers oatmeal cloth with brown and yellow stamped lettering panels to the spine. In the original dustwrapper with some loss to the top, and to a much lesser extent the bottom of the spine, not affecting the lettering, and a couple of closed tears, without loss, to the front and rear panels. Lower panel a bit marked but overall a very good copy. A nice copy of Russell's hugely popular history, broadly covering covering philosophers and philosophical thought from the Pre-Socratics up to John Dewey and William James, and finishing with Logical Analysis. Russell won the Nobel prize for Literature in 1950, with the Nobel committee listing this title among the works that influenced their decision. While criticised by some as being too general, many found the book an accessible and easily readable introduction to Philosophy and it became a best seller which has not been out of print since.
