John Halsham or George Forrester Scott to give him his real name was born in Yorkshire but moved to Lindfield Sussex soon after graduating from Oxford,his family home being the spectacular timbered manor house known as Old Place were he wrote "Idlehurst" about the district calling it "Arnington" though the many familiar features can be recognised. Nearby Ardingly to which he later moved he disguised as Sheringham. The book describes in great detail life in the medieval village at the close of the 19th century with memorable portraits of its inhabitants and is now regarded as a conservation classic widely available in various digitised forms.
