First edition. The 24 spectacular hand-coloured plates, each tissue guarded and accompanied by an explanatory text leaf. There are 20 to 30 delicately coloured specimens in each plate, ranging from 1/2” to 3” each — snails, oysters, cockles, mussels, limpets, etc. — mollusca all, arranged taxonomically. Prospectus tipped in at rear, together with a publisher’s catalogue. Two later unrelated shell plates are also tipped in next to similar species.
Dealer Notes
The Sowerby family specialized in finely illustrated works on natural history, and were authorities in different areas of study, ranging from botany to the natural history of China. This work would be enhanced and enlarged by Sowerby’s son (G.B Sowerby III) in 1887
