These letters are personal accounts of the experiences of the correspondents, whether they arrived in Australia as free emigrants or were sent as convicts. All were experiencing life in a far distant part of the world, about which so little was known, particularly not to the convicts. The letters often provided informative and useful information for those intending to make a new life in the Antipodes, information which was not otherwise readily available.
