Original full black sheep wallet binding (loss of leather at foot of spine; rubbed; corners worn), remains of original elastic over fastening, pocket for pencil (not present). A fully completed daily diary of an unnamed Kentish Victorian young woman. We follow her around her daily life from the roast goose and plum pudding of New Year’s Day, through the January frosts and snow, needlework, and letter writing, reading The Spectator, and keeping up with the news (resignation of Chamberlain & Trevelian over Irish policy), attendance and meetings, holidays in Hampshire, Brighton, and St. Leonards, as well as public events such as the 6th Industrial Exhibition at Westerham. She has social network with other women, and appears to assist her mother in charitable activities and is involved in the Zenana Indian women’s educational mission, and attends meetings. She is also heavily involved her local mothers union, and the Band Of Hope temperance movement in the area, and has fun creating a cabinet of curiosities. All combine to give a compelling picture of a rural life in Victorian England.
