MANUSCRIPT MARITIME LETTER 1763 WITH REFERENCE TO THE LEITH HALL DUEL
Book Description
Letter to Charles Irving from Alexander Brand, Edinburgh 29th Dec 1763.
“I received your letter to Mr Abercrombie which I delivered to him. Mr Brodie has had all your papers. Will meet tomorrow, that Mr B. May fully understand it.”
“I have the pleasure to advise you of the safe arrival of all this years fleet. The last ship hardly left a cargo to another”
“P.S. That unlucky affair of Leithhall’s makes a noise here to be more like murder than a DUEL. It’s thought the Bros will get trouble as being accessary”
Dealer Notes
Charles Irving was a Scottish Naval Surgeon, who in 1770 introduced a method for distillation of Seawater to the Royal Navy.
A Duel was fought on December 21st 1763 (just over a week before this letter) where John Abernethy of Mayen, killed John Leith, 3rd Laird of Leith Hall.
The reference to a Mr Brodie in the Edinburgh of late 1763 - could he be the notorious Deacon Brodie (1741-1788) or family of, who were in Edinburgh at this time?
