Dealer Notes
William Gilpin (1724-1804), writer on art and headmaster, born near Carlisle. After visiting the gardens at Stowe he wrote a "Dialogue upon the Gardens..." in which he made the distinctions between moral and aesthetic beauty in nature and ruins, and laid the foundations for his later works on the picturesque, from which he gained immense popularity. This set represents all his writings on the subject apart from the "Dialogue".
