Handbook to Ruthin and vicinity by Lewis Jones. originally published in 1884, The handbook is concerned with vivid descriptions of the buildings of the town, including the Castle,, ancient inns, and houses. the handbook also includes 15 pages of advertisements, providing a snapshot of activity in the town a century ago.
An Account of the Castle and Town of Ruthin by Richard Newcome originally published in 1829. The author visualises the appearance of the castle in its pre-ruinous state. The family history of the De Grey family of Ruthin – the Lords of the Castle – is traced from the thirteenth century up to the author’s own lifetime. An extensive section of the work covers the period of the Civil War in the area, leading up to the surrender of Ruthin castle to the Parliamentary forces in 1646.
