Book Description

With a pleasing and very early presentation date to the title page: 'C.W. with the love + best wishes of M.C.W. Janry 29th 1860.' There are advertorial endpapers: at the front Burke’s Peerage, dated 1860, and at the back the Foreign Office List, this not dated. (Later issues had the date 1860 inserted.) The title page does not bear the legend about the rights of translation which was added in February 1860. At one point the lower edge and right-hand edge have been in water and there is a light tide mark throughout, more noticeable at the front and back of the text block. This has also caused some apparent loss to the lower edge of the advertorial endpapers. However the lost parts, which are in any case very small, are present and are stuck to the pastedowns. The front pastedown has the book plate of Margaret C Wallace and a binder’s ticket of Folthorp, Brighton. I have been unable to trace her. Externally the book is the original dark brown cloth, very clean and bright, with a new spine to match. The corners are barely rubbed.
