Orpheus Britannicus, A collection of all the choicest songs for one, two, and three voices / compos'd by Mr. Henry Purcell
Book Description
First edition. Folio. Frontis present, pp vi, 248, margins rather trimmed occasionally affecting the page numbers. Contemporary half calf on paper boards, paper rather abraded on front board, later reback using original label, edges speckled. Ownership label in red leather James Edward Madocks esq to front board, table of contents leaf not present, seemingly never bound in, an early hand has written out a few of the songs with their page number to a blank leaf in front of the frontis. A little browning here and there, but a decent example overall, even given its faults, and with the frontispiece. James Madocks was the son-in-law of the well-known traveller, Elizabeth Craven, but unfortunately came to rather a sticky end: it is said on the Craven blogspot that …it was a shocking death, as Maddocks gambled away his fortune at Watier's club in London and then cut his own throat. Still an evocative provenance, as the family were well known for their amateur theatricals. One of the great inspirational cornerstones of British musical culture, in its first edition, which includes also excerpts from Dido and Aeneas. Please note faults, but priced accordingly.
