*From Cheselden's Osteographia; or The Anatomy of the Bones, the first full and accurate description of the anatomy of the human skeletal system.
Through his innovative use of a camera obscura in the production of the plates, William Cheselden’s Osteographia, is recognized as a landmark in the history of anatomical illustration.
However highly it is esteemed today, it was a financial failure for its author - with few copies finding buyers and many of the unsold copies were broken up for the plates in order to recover some of the authors costs. Despite that - after 290 years original examples of the individual plates remain comparatively uncommon in current commerce - and rare surviving copies of the complete book are offered for sale in excess of £10,000.
