Pp [iv], 75, [2] , 5 unnumbered leaves of plates : illustrations ; 17.5cm “Originally published in 'Blackwood's Magazine' " to the half title verso.Bound in dark green cloth with bevelled edged boards. The front board has a panel stamped ornate border and gilt illustration of an open book held by animals which shows the title, with the name of the author also in gilt. The lower cover repeats the border in blind. The spine also has the title in gilt. Endpapers dark green. Illustrated throughout, some plates with the signatures of Griset and Swain. A Very Good copy, but with a few minor blemishes, short tears and folds to page edges from opening . Previously listed at £120 [Sir Edward Bruce Hamley KCB KCMG (27 April 1824 – 12 August 1893) was a British general, military writer and Conservative politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1885 to 1892. Hamley took interest in animal welfare. He wrote “Our Poor Relations” in 1872, and the book reflected his strong compassion for animals and his horror of and anger at their mistreatment. He attacked animal rescue homes, and vivisection, writing that the ‘miscreants of veterinary colleges’ find ‘a horrid relish in their vile vocation’, and he lambasts Naturalists collecting specimens; ‘no kind of creature that can be classified comes amiss as a victim, from a butterfly to a hippopotamus’.] Uncommon, especially in this condition.
