Dealer Notes
Ellen Thorbecke was the wife of the former Netherlands Minister in China. She published books on Hong Kong, Shanghai and Peking. "The author, during four years in the Far East, made a close study of Chinese politics and economics as well as the psychological peculiarities and customs of the people. She has selected thirty-two photographic portraits which illustrate varying characteristics of the Chinese - of men and women in different walks of life- who represent the old and the new order, from the aristocrat and the philosopher to the humble rickshaw-coolie and the sing-song girl of the tea-house.".
