Photograph album Top British Men & Women Golfers 1906-1911
Book Description
Photograph album with British Golfers 1906-1911. Album size 30 by 25 cm. A full album in original stiff covers containing 96 images each 10 by 7.5 cm. The photos all have captions underneath in pencil with names, dates, locations etc. 11 are of golf courses and club houses, 10 are of male golfers and 4 of women players (in what seem to be tournaments). The players identified by name include the women golfers Dorothy Campbell and Miss Cecil Leitch and amongst the men, James Braid. Several other names are mentioned though the handwritten captions are sometimes difficult to interpret. Dorothy Campbell was the first woman to win the US, British and Canadian women’s amateur championships; Cecil Leitch won twelve national titles and James Braid won the British Open five times. Places & courses mentioned in terms of golf include Birkdale, Sunningdale, Walton Heath, Stoke Poges, Budleigh Salterton and Bideford and Westward Ho! The album seems to have belonged to an affluent British family who took motoring trips around Britain and also holidayed- and played some golf- in the Canary Islands and France at some point. Their life seems to have been one of leisure, playing and watching golf and visiting some attractive locations including Newquay, Bath, Wells, Cheddar, Lyme Regis, Clovelly and Bideford. Several families are named- the Da Vincis, the Nedhams and the Johnsons. Whilst the majority of the photographs are of people and places in an age before mass entertainment and motoring for the masses it’s the 25 images that relate to golf and golfers that give this album its unique interest.
