Contemporary or near contemporary quarter black calf on cloth boards. Rather foxed, notably to first half, thereafter lessening. All plates in good condition, with no marking or tears. Stanhope s researches have a fascinating background: he was taken prisoner in the Napoleonic Wars, and permitted to go free on condition he surveyed Olympia, which he did accompanied by Allason. Later, he was drawn to the cause of Greek Independence. This issue of plans by Rodwell, combining both of Stanhope s surveys, is exceedingly rare, whether in commerce or in libraries. Please note the foxing (as often with this set), but the plates could be cleaned or of course left as they are. Not in Blackmer (but see Blackmer 1596 for the Olympia set alone, Blackmer 1597 for the later McLean reprint, there incomplete).
