In 1862, the company founder Joseph Gotteswinter received the "Concession in the Name of His Majesty" Maximilian II to operate a book printing company and moved into rooms on Theatinerstraße 18. Ludwig II succeeded to the title in 1864 and remained King of Bavaria until his death in 1886. In 1870 Bavaria fought alongside Prussia. After the Prussian victory, Bismark moved to complete the Unification of Germany.
