Scenery of the River Dart. 1821.

Book Description
LEWIS, Frederick Christian. Scenery of the River Dart, being a series of thirty-five views representing the most interesting features in its course, from its source in the wildest and most uncultivated parts of Dartmoor, to its mouth in the English Channel. Executed to form as nearly as possible fac-similes of the drawings, and therefore calculated not only to interest the admirers of nature, and those unacquainted with the country, but also to form a set of studies for the learner of landscape drawing. Engraved half-title with vignette., engraved title-page with large vignette, engraved dedication with vignette, preface and list of subscribers, and 36 sepia aquatint and etched plates. A fine clean uncut copy bound in recent half green morocco, with the original pictorial etched paper label mounted onto the upper board.
folio. Published June 1, 1821, by F.C. Lewis, 9 Southampton Row, Paddington, J. & A. Arch, Cornhill, and R. Triphook, Old Bond Street, London, [1821].
~ The name Revd Danl. Lysons has been added in a contemporary hand at the end of the list of subscribers, and there is a pencil note on a preliminary blank. Also under one of the vignettes is written “This work may contribute to illustrate the History of Devon by the Revd Danl Lysons...”
Drawings for some of the plates were by Emily Calmady, Miss Snow, and Mrs Seale. The subscribers to the work also included Haydon, Wilkie, and Cotman. Lewis also engraved illustrations for John Varley’s Precepts of Landscape Drawing (1818).
