The result of several explorations in Tuscany, Lazio and Umbria from 1842 to 1878, this work remains the fundamental reference and guide to the Etruscan city-states. Dennis made further tours of Etruria following the publication of the first edition of this work, and subsequently expanded the content: "Since the publication of the former edition of this work in 1848, many important and interesting discoveries have been made in Etruria... In preparing then a new edition, it has been my task not only to visit the sites of these discoveries, and note them on the spot... In short it has been my aim to present to the public an account of antiquarian researches in Etruria down to the present day".
