Bound in original Dutch floral paper covered boards, rebacked, and with new endpapers. A defective copy of this extremely fugitive edition of this work. An online resource “SoundSurvey”[://www.soundsurvey.org.uk/index.php/history/street_cries/brit1/494/2938] shows the 1796 edition of the work, with floral decorative embellishments around the cuts. Our edition has essentially the same text, sometimes laid out differently, and has the same plates. We think this copy is the 1791 first edition although with the absence of a title page, this is not clear. The later 1804 work with the same title is an altogether different edition. The collation should read : title, blank, (v) 6-127, blank, 129-131 [A description of London], 132 -133 [A Song On The City of London](vi unnumbered pages of the publisher's catalogue), final blank . [P132 is wrongly numbered as 133]. This copy lacks all before (iii) at A4, pp9-14, 63/64 torn with loss, pp 93/94, 107/108, 109/110, 123/124. The only other copy that we can find for sale online also lacks 93/94 and 123/124. An additional seven leaves or so have been strengthened with archival repair tape, some with loss. Ownership inscription to verso of first blank” H.T.Deade Eius Liber, Domum 1825 ….the gift of Mary Deade” . We have found a record of Hicks Thomas Deade , aged 44 and born in 1817, as Vicar of Bawburgh in the Norfolk 1861 census. This would have made him around eight years of age when he was given the book. This is a delightful little book, despite the defects, and very difficult to find for sale in any condition. From what we can glean of U.K. holdings, The British Library has a physical copy of the 1796 edition and Oxford University Library has a physical copy of the 1791 edition in the Bodleian.
