The Gulistân or Rose Garden of Sa’di. Faithfully Translated into English [by Burton and Arbuthnot].
Book Description
First edition, first issue. 8vo. pp. x, 282; rough-trimmed; pencilled ownership inscription to flyleaf, else very good in original vellum, gilt, slightly rubbed and marked, but in fact a better than average copy.
Dealer Notes
Penzer p. 177. Burton and Arbuthnot (who was one of Burton's close friends) collaborated on many literary projects and founded the Kama Shastra Society, under the auspices of which many erotic titles - as well as the Arabian Nights - were published. This was necessary due to the prevailing sentiment in Victorian England against anything that was overly sexual.
