The Happy Testament

Book Description
The sole UK printing published by Chatto & Windus, London in 1913. The Book is in Very Good++ or better condition. Stiff card covers decorated in blue and red to a design by Rachel (Ray) Marshall before her marriage to David Garnett. 20 pp., with coloured fortis. Illustrations throughout in colour by Marshall. The card cover WRAPPER is in Very Good++ condition with a little creasing to the yapped edges. Slight loss at the spine tips. The book was one of many reprints of a humorous work by American attorney Williston Fish ( who used the pseudonym of Charles Loundsberry ) which first appeared in 1898. Rachel Marshall joined the Central School of Arts and Crafts in 1912 and was a close friend of Vivien Gribble. She was one of the earliest pupils of Noel Rooke, who particularly admired her work and who was responsible for introducing her to the publisher's Chatto & Windus. She produced wood-engraved illustrations for several books, mostly written by her husband , David Garnett. 'Lady into a Fox' published in 1922 became a best seller. Garnett was a prominent member of the Bloomsbury Group. 'The Happy Testament' was Ray Garnett's first illustrated book for Chatto & Windus. Protected in a loose archival folder. A very handsome production and a very scarce copy with JSIC listing just 7 copies held in institutions.
