An impressive, and imposing, large folio volume from the classic work by David Hume - almost 'elephant folio' in size. This large tome was part of the first folio edition of 'The History of England', following its first printing in 1754-1761. The History of England; from the Invasion of Julius Caesar to the Revolution in 1688. This is volume III from the set, although on spine marked as Vol. V (the full set would have originally comprised 5 Volumes, bound as 10 books), covering the reigns of Edward VI, Mary, and; Elizabeth I; (the period c. 1547 - 1586). By David Hume. Printed by T. Bensley for Robert Bowyer, London, 1806. First folio edition. A very good example of this sumptuous volume. Bound in full leather, the original spines and covers have been professionally rebacked. With raised bands and tooled gilt decoration. The leather with old scuffing and some scratch marks. With plain card endpapers and gilt inner dentelles. Soundly bound. All printed on a high quality paper. The majority of the text pages are beautifully clean and bright with only the occasional light mark. Gilt edges to text block. The full page engravings are of high quality. Plates have foxing/age spotting - mainly marginal, and create offsetting and spotting to surrounding text pages. Despite any flaws, a hugely impressive volume (and very uncommon as a large folio example). Text in English. Main title + Third Volume Contents page + 433pp + Plates.
