Book Description
Two volumes octavo bound in fine contemporary tree calf. Spines with contrasting morocco labels with volume number in red leather lozenges; floral gilt decoration and fine gilt roll between fillets on the boards; edges of boards gilt; marbled endpapers; light yellow edges. Slight scuff and ink splash on lower board of Volume 2. The marbled paper on the leading endpaper of Volume 1 is a little damaged in the centre. The text is fresh and clean. Publisher's advertisement on verso of final leaf, illustrations in text. A beautiful copy.
Dealer Notes
Provenance: front paste-downs with the engraved armorial bookplate of Sir Thomas Beauchamp Proctor (1756-1827) of Langly Park, Norfolk. His portrait was painted by the great American artist, Benjamin West.
