The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit by Charles Dickens. With illustrations by Phiz.
Book Description
First edition. Bound in two vols. Vol 1: Frontis, engraved title page, printed title page, dedication, preface, contents, list of plates, and errata leaf, followed by text pp [iii]-xiv [ii], 1-288. Vol 2 [i-ii], 289-624. Complete and correct. The half title is used as a part-title for Volume 2, and there are 400 plates by Phiz, as listed. In this example, the pound sign is correctly oriented on the engraved title page, and there are 14 lines to the errata leaf. Bound in contemporary half morocco, decorated bands, bands, contrasting labels, marbled boards, marbled edges, pale grey endpapers, later book label of David Graham. Slightly rubbed to binding and boards, some foxing as usual and not nearly as severe as often in Chuzzlewit. Overall an unusually attractive and original example in its contemporary state.
