Dealer Notes
First published in 1772 with just 60pp, this fourth edition is almost double the size of the third. “From the additions, alterations, and I hope improvements made in almost every part of the book, since the publication of the third edition of 1777, it may perhaps more properly be called a new work, than the revival of an old one.” It includes a complete Catalogue of the Pictures, Statues and Busts at Holkham, and of the Curiosities and Paintings at Narford. One of the major changes was to update the description of Houghton Hall, as since the last edition, the 3rd Earl of Orford had sold the collection of old master paintings to Catherine the Great.
